Biography

There is no record of Roderick's birth. The 1851 census gives the information that he was born in Contin, Ross-shire, Scotland. DNA matches have shown that he is related the McLennan family who emigrated to Tasmania and introduced Roderick as an emigrant. So he probably had an older brother John who was also born in Contin. [Roderick is not John's son as John's children were born in Kiltearn, Rossshire where he was married.]

Roderick was married on 11 December 1846 to Elizabeth McCallum by a minister of the Mariner's Church, Leith, Midlothian, Scotland. Roderick was a labourer of Johnston Street, North Leith. Elizabeth was living at Canon Street and a daughter of Edward McCallam, a shepherd of the parish of Callander.

Roderick and Elizabeth were living at 13 Johnston Street, North Leith in 1851 with many other families. They did not have any children. Roderick was aged 35 and worked as a sugar refiner.

Their only child Catherine Christina was said to be born in Aberdeen in 1853 though there has been no evidence found of this.

Roderick, Elizabeth and Catherine emigrated to Launceston, Tasmania on the "Fortune", arriving on 1 June 1857.[1] Roderick was a farm labourer from Edinburgh was Church of England and could read and write, though he signed with a cross at his daughter's marriage 19 years later.

Elizabeth died in 1881 and Roderick with living with his daughter and son-in-law in Turner's Marsh until his death in 1899 at the age of about 84.

When Donald McLennan (brother of James McLennan who introduced Roderick to Tasmania) died in 1911, the informant was J.A. Box of Turner's Marsh, his cousin. (Actually his wife's cousin). This is the clue between the relationship of the McLennan's in Tasmania, confirmed by DNA matches.
