Biography

Alexander was born in Girvan on 4 February 1846 and was baptised there on 29th Marrch 1846. He was the son of Alexander McMillan and Jane McGill.

In 1851, Alexander, aged 5, and his family were living at an address in Old Street, Girvan. [1]

His father died shortly after 1851 and by the time of the 1861 Census, Alexander, aged 14, was living with his mother and siblings David McMillan and Andrew McMillan at an address in Wilson Street. [2]

After the 1861 Census, Alexander, his mother and siblings left Girvan to join the rest of the family in Glasgow. In 1871 he was living in at 72 Paisley Road, Tradeston, Glasgow with his mother, brother Andrew and niece Sarah McMillan, daughter of his sister Elizabeth McMillan. Both Alexander and Andrew are listed as 'Carters'. [3]

On 30th December 1873 Alexander married Fanny McJorrow at St Ninian's Church, Pollockshaws Road, Glasgow. [4]

In 1881, Alexander was about 30 years old. He lived at 32 Kinning Street in the Tradeston district of Glasgow where he was a general carter. Also present were his wife Fanny and children David McMillan, Alexander McMillan and Agnes McMillan. A nephew, John Thomson aged 2 was also present.[5]

By 1891, the family had moved to an address known as Campbell's Land, still in the same district of Tradeston. Alexander, 44, was now a sawdust merchant. Two more children, James McMillan and William McMillan were also present. [6]

Fanny died in 1893 and by the time of the 1901 Census, Sarah Queen had taken up residence in the family home. Although they did not marry until 1905,[7] she is listed as Alexander's wife, Sarah McMillan. Also present were James and William. [8]

Alexander died on 5th January 1912 in Pollockshields, Glasgow. He died of a tumour and his death was registered by his daughter Agnes. [9]
