By 1851, like the rest of his family, John, now 14, was a Cotton Handloom Weaver living and working with his family at an address in Old Street, Girvan. . [3]
Between 1851 and 1861, John moved to Glasgow and was living at 11 Old Dalmarnock Road, not far from his sister Elizabeth McMillan. On 31st December 1860, at Bridgeton Free Church in London Road, Glasgow, he married Jane Rogers, a 19 year old factory worker and native of Glasgow, daughter of John Rodger, ploughman (deceased) and Sarah Noble.[4]
By the time of the 1861 Census John and Jane had moved to 29 Hozier Street, Bridgeton. According to the Census, John was still a cotton weaver however Jane had left her job as a factory worker and was now a cotton winder. [5]
Their daughter Sarah was born in 1861 [6] followed by their daughter Jane in 1864 [7].
Jane did not survive infancy and died of debility in 1865 [8]followed a few days later by his wife, Jane, who died of phthisis. [9] .
Both these death registrations record John's profession as 'carpet weaver'.
On 16th February 1866 John married Annie Gallacher, an 18 year old, spinster, Power Loom Weaver. John's ocupation is recorded as 'dyer journeyman'. Both gave their address as 201 London Road, Glasgow. Annie's parents were Peter Gallacher, a furnace keeper and Annie Gallacher. The witnesses were J. McCrindle and Elizabeth McCrindle. [10]
Their son, John, was born on 16th December 1866 at 201 London Road, Bridgeton and John's occupation was listed as 'Yarn Dyer'. [11]
Sarah died of consumption on 19th November 1871. [12]
