He lived at the corner of Wellington and Grey Streets in Northam and died at home age 64.

He is buried in Northam Cemetery.

MR R. G. MEARES. The demise of an old resident of the town in the person of Mr Richard George Meares, which sad event transpired at his residence, Wellington street, removes from our midst a familiar figure. The deceased gentleman who was 64 years of age, was born in the adjoining town of York in 1849, where he resided for some years, when his parents shifted to Perth. After a time he took to a roving life, and for some years managed "Culham, now the property of Mr J. Phillips. From thence he took charge of the late Mr W. Padbury's property at Dundarregan. Returning to Perth at the age of 24, he married Ellen, the youngest daughter of Mr James Nairn, a well known business man in the early days of the State, who survives him. He returned to York for a few years, and about 30 years ago took up his residence in Northam, where he resided up to the time of his death. He started a butcher's business on the site now occupied by Messrs G. Donald and Co., which after carrying on for some years he relinquished and started in the aerated waters line in premises situated where Messrs Milner and Co. now carry on business. Finding his business increasing, he built a factory in Wellington street, adjoining his home, and after successfully carrying it on for some years he retired, and had lived practically a retired life ever since. He was a man who gained the highest respect of his fellow men by his upright character. He was of a most charitable nature, and no case of genuine want was brought under his notice without receiving assistance. He was one of the earliest members of the Freemasons Lodge at York. For some time the deceased had not experienced good health, but did not take to his bed until Saturday last, and died on Wednesday night. The deceased leaves a widow and an only son, Mr S. G. Meares, to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Friday morning, and was largely attended by prominent citizens and friends. The remains were interred in the Anglican portion of the local cemetery, the Rev. J. P Davoren conducting the impressive service. The chief mourners were Mr S. G. Meares (son), Messrs G. and W. Meares (brothers), and S. Viveash (brother-in-law). The pall-bearers were Messrs C. Kelso, A. Grose, D. T. Morrell, Jas. Morrell, W. J. Morgan, and Horace Withnell. Numerous letters, telegrams, and floral tributes were received. Messrs H. and H. Wiithnell carried out the funeral arrangements.
