Biography

Philander Grant Metcalf was born on May 7, 1806 in Washington, Orange, Vermont to Levi Metcalf and Lucy Grant^[1].

He married Dortha Mattice on September 4, 1828 in Herkimer, Herkimer, New York^[2]. They had eight children:

• Mary Metcalf
• Catharine Metcalf
• Lucy Metcalf
• Franklin Metcalf
• Morris Metcalf
• Theodore Metcalf
• Philander Metcalf
• Ellen Metcalf

Philander was living in Herkimer during the 1830 census. His household consisted of one male age twenty to twenty-nine, one female age twenty to twenty-nine, and one female under age five^[3].

He was still residing in Herkimer during the 1840 census. His household consisted of two males under age five, one male age thirty to thirty-nine, one male age seventy to seventy-nine, two females age five to nine, one female age ten to fourteen, and one female age thirty to thirty-nine^[4].

Philander and Dortha were residing in Little Falls, Herkimer, New York during the 1850 census with their children Mary, Catharine, Lucy, Francis, Morris, Theodore, Philander, and Ellen^[5].

The family was still residing in Little Falls during the 1855 census with their children Mary, Catherin, Lucy, F (Franklin), M (Morris), J (Theodore), P (Philander), and H (Ellen)^[6].

Philander and his wife continued residing in Little Falls through 1860 with their children Mary, Catharine, Lucy, Franklin, Morris, Theodore, Philander, and Ellen. He was working as a day laborer^[7].

The couple was still residing in Little Falls during the 1865 census with their children Mary, Kate, Lucy, Morris, Theodore, and Philander^[8].

We don't see Philander again until the 1880 census where he is residing in Manheim, Herkimer, New York with his daughter, Ellen Sheldon^[9].

Philander died on October 26, 1881 in Utica, Oneida, New York at the age of seventy-five of bronchitis^[10].
