Added 16 Dec 2017 by Francis E. Berkey (Berkey-120), The area community of the Swiss/German families which included Amish, Amish/Mennonite, German Reformed, Brethren, Lutheran and other protestant denominations included many Lints, Berkeys, Millers, Hershbergers, Hochstetlers, Hooblers, Yoders and on and on. They were a close knit community that my Grandfather, Willis Berkey b. 29 Apr 1886 married on 22 Aug 1906 Minnie Agnes Hoobler b. 8 Jan 1881 all in Baltic, Bucks Twp., Tuscarawas Co., OH was very closely acquainted with. After being born and raised in Orrville, Wayne Co. and spending every weekend at my grandparents home and many trips to visit with friends and relatives, the area seems like home. I wish I had gotten interested in genealogy much earlier while they were still living as I could have asked rather than suspecting. Although my intuition has serve me well over our years of research. Grandpa called their common language "low German". He indicated that the original language "high German" was similar but not quite. Low is many times referred to as Pennsylvania Dutch. I suspect that he didn't try very hard to teach it to me because private conversations with grandma took place making use of it. Simon is AKA ML623 in the G&K genealogies. FEB Added 5 Mar 2018 by FEB I'm back to fill out the family some more, been off to the Mishlers first and got that family. Now I go here for a while.

  • Personal family information both written and from family Bibles gathered over several years of travel and library research. Original edition The Berkey Book and also 2nd edition which has many Berkeys that I personally researched as well as Line 26 which is started with Orange Grove Berkey. This is as close as our branch comes but in Line 3 appears his younger sister, Catherine Winchester Berkey who married Joseph Hochstetler who is DJH-4263. This was actually a mistake on the part of the informant named Wade Miller whose mother was a Berkey and since Catherine was in the household of Jacob Berkey he thought she was his daughter but she was not. Many of my relatives are in Descendants of Jacob Hochstetler first published in 1912 by Rev. Harvey Hostetler, D.D. long before computers.

Footnote; When I personally met Wade Miller at his home in Dover, OH shortly before his death to explain Catherine Winchester (Berkey) Hochstetler to him, he showed me his collection of 23 thick loose leaf binders full of research. At that time he mentioned that when he traveled into PA to talk to the descendant families that when he broke into the Dutch it made things a whole lot easier. Many times his neighbors 3 doors down, Norma Jean (Christner) & Myron Ott went along. Baltic folks with Norma being granddaughter of grandpa's mother. When she heard I was in town she had me stop by and get information and pictures. FEB
