James married Elizabeth Gertrude Pettus on 10 January 1870 in Garrard County, Kentucky. [3] They had one son: William Pettus Miller (1870-).
James Miller and E.R. Chenault posted a marriage bond for James Miller and Susan Elizabeth Chenault on 56 April 1872 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. The marriage was the 2nd for 38-year-old James, a farmer in Cincoln County, Kentuck; his parents were born in Madison County, Kentucky. It was the 1st marriage for 30-year-old Susan Chenault of Madison County, Kentucky. They were married at Mrs. H. Chenault, Lincoln County, Kentucky; in the presence of John Miller, Jason Chenault, Edward R Chenault, and others.[4]
James, Susan, and three children were enumerated in the 1880 census of Peabody, Marion, Kansas.[5]

James died in 1906 in Indian Territory. Prior to his death in Indian Territory, he had requested that his body be shipped back to Richmond, Kentucky, for burial. He is buried in Richmond Cemetery, Madison County, Kentucky.[7]
