Biography

Benjamin Milliken, born about 1794 in New Brunswick, was the son of Loyalist Norman Milliken and Susannah Walton.[1] The Millikens moved to Markham, York County, Upper Canada, about 1805.

During the War of 1812, Benjamin Milliken/Milligan served as a private and corporal in the 1st York Militia. [2]

He was present at the Battle of Queenston Heights, probably with Captain Selby's Flank Company. [3]

Some time between July 1 to Oct. 24, 1812, he served as a private in Capt. Selby’s Flank Co. [4]

From Nov. 25 to Dec. 24, 1812, he served as a private in Captain Thomas Selby’s Flank Company. [5]

From July 21 to 24, 1813, he was at the York at the Alarm as a private. [6]

From Sept. 25 to Oct. 3, 1813, he served as a corporal in Capt. James Fenwick’s Co. [7]

On Mar. 22, 1819, Benjamin Milliken, a yeoman of Markham Twp., made a land petition. He had volunteered to serve in a flank company of the 1st York Militia during the late war. He was born in New Brunswick and arrived in Upper Canada as a child. This document did not indicate where he received his land grant. [8]

On July 9, 1833, Benjamin Milliken, a farmer of Markham Twp. and a former private in a flank company of the 1st York Militia, received 100 acres on the north half of Lot 14, Con. 1, Mariposa Twp., Victoria County, Ontario. [9]

He also served in the militia during the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion and eventually attained the rank of major in his regiment.

"Benjamin Milliken, son of Norman Milliken, U.E.L., and married to Josiah Hemmingway's daughter, Eleanor, was a captain and later a major of the York Militia during the troubles of 1837 and 1838." [10]

As a young man, he worked at his father's mill, then turned to farming. In recognition of his military service, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace in York County.[11]

He passed away in 1863[12]and was buried at Hagerman Cemetery, Markham, Ontario.[13]

I have added information to this profile as a project manager with the wikitree Upper Canada War of 1812 Project. I am not related to this family.

Please email me, if you have questions about this war and other veterans and their families.

I am still looking for the payroll for the Battle of Queenston Heights. Some Hemmingway men served in the same regiment.
