Norman Milliken, born about 1771 in Maine, was the son of Loyalist Benjamin Milliken. After the War of Independence, the Millikens moved to New Brunswick. In 1805 Norman moved to York County, Upper Canada, where he was a farmer, lumber mill operator and hotel and tavern keeper.
"In 1807, Norman Milliken, a Loyalist from New Brunswick, settled on lot 1, conc. 5 [in Markham], and engaged in the lumbering business, supplying the British Naval authorities. In order to control the drinking habits of the lumberman, Milliken bought or built a hotel on property he purchased on part of lot 1, conc. 6; the livery stables were located on the site of the present Texaco station, and numbers of old coins have been dug up in the area. Norman's daughter, Charlotte, a large, strong woman, was able to control any trouble in the tavern, which later burned down when fire destroyed the post office (granted in 1859). The Millikens, John, Norman and James, were still on lot 1, conc. 5 in 1860 (Tremaine map). " [1]
Milliken in Toronto and Milliken Mills in Markham were probably named after Norman or the Milliken family.
