of a bullock-dray at Blackfellows Creek, F. W.

the late W. H. Mitchell, of Melbourne Street, North

laide. Came to the colony in 1837, in the ship
Catherine Stewart Forbes."[9]
His death was noted in the Evening Journal:
"FATAL ACCIDENT NEAR CLARENDON.
Our correspondent writes—An accident
happened at Blackfellow's Creek near the
Meadows on Saturday last, which terminated
fatally. Mr. F. W. Mitchell, of Point Sturt,
who had bought some land at Blackfellow's
Creek, was in company with one of his sons
on their way to the Creek, and when going
round a sidling with a team of bullocks and
dray, which the son was driving, the father ran
to screw up the skid. The dray immediately
turned over, crushing the old gentleman
underneath, and coming upright on its wheels
afterwards. Unfortunately there was no one
about the place at the time but Mr. James
Oakley and one of his men. The latter was
dispatched to the Meadows to telegraph for Dr.
Jackson, who arrived about twenty minutes
before Mitchell died. The deceased gentleman
was one of our old colonists, having
arrived in the colony in the ship Catherine
Stewart Forbes in the year 1837. After
coming here he was in business in Adelaide
as a blacksmith and wheelwright, but about
twenty-eight years ago he left Adelaide and
went to Mount Torrens, and thence to Point
Sturt, where he has resided ever since, and
has made many friends."[10]
