Biography

Robert Montfort, Esq., styled "the younger", was the son of Baldwin Montfort, Knt., and Joan Vernon.[1][2][3] His date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

Robert married Mary Stapleton, daughter and co-heiress of [?John Stapleton] and Margaret Stapleton, daughter of John Stapleton, Esq.[2] of Stapleton, Shropshire and Dormington, Herefordshire, etc.[1] Mary and Robert had one daughter:

In 1455 Mary, her husband Robert Montfort, and her fellow Stapleton co-heirs presented to the Free Chapel of St. John the Baptist at Stapleton, Shropshire.[1][2]

In 1465, Robert was accused of treason.[1] In 1470 Robert Montfort and other Stapleton co-heirs were summoned at the suit of Thomas Horde and Joyce his wife in a plea that a partition be made of the manors of Stapleton, Armegrove, and Folhampton, Shropshire, formerly belonging to John Stapleton, Esq, grandfather of Mary, late wife of Robert Montfort.[2]

He may be the Robert Montfort, Esq. "of Wykenhyll" who issued a bond in 1477 to John Archer, Esq.[1][2] His date and place of death are unknown.

He was a descendant of King Henry II.[4]
