Biography

Hugh was born in 1893 in Sydney, NSW, the son of Edward and Jessie Moore.

Hugh was a boilermaker's assistant. He worked for Mort Dock, Sydney for 2 years and Poole & Steele for 2 years. He then joined the NSW Government Railways, Metropolitan Division as a boilermaker's helper on 20 Mar 1916.

In 1917 he applied to become an Australian Munitions Worker under a joint Australian government/ British government scheme to supply skilled workers for the War effort in the UK. At the time he was single and living in Ultimo, NSW.

He was accepted and was granted leave by NSW Government Railways. His agreement was signed on 08 Jun 1917 and he was issued with Australian Munitions Worker Badge No. 2412. He embarked on the SS "Beltana", arriving at Plymouth, England on 24 Aug 1917.

Hugh commenced work as a boilermaker's assistant at Scotts Works, Greenock, Scotland on 27 Aug 1917. In Jun 1918 he queried his rate of pay and requested a transfer to Grangemouth Harbour, Greenock as a fitter's labourer. Australian authorities requested the Ministry of Munitions investigate his case and make adjustments.

Hugh returned to Australia on the SS "Lucie Woermann", departing from Tilbury, England on 03 Jun 1919. His agreement was terminated as complete on 28 Jul 1919 after disembarking in Sydney.

He then returned to his position with NSW Government Railways. He was a Structural Steel Worker's Assistant. During WW2 he was again granted leave to pursue shipbuilding and he returned to the Railways on 15 Apr 1946 as a Boilermaker at Chullora, NSW. He moved to Sydenham, NSW in 1949 and was appointed as a Welder 1st Class on 17 Apr 1950.

Hugh married twice. Firstly he married Sadie Isabel Wonders in Sydney in 1921. Sadie died in 1933.[1][2] There were children.

He remarried to Bertha Eileen Annie Knight at Petersham, NSW in 1938.

He retired from the Railways on 07 Apr 1954.

He died at Hornsby, NSW in 1973.
