Biography

Samuel Mosby, a prominent landowner and veteran of the American Revolution, He was born on January 2, 1767, in Henrico County, to John and Lucy Mosby, who were both of English descent. He married Mary Anderson, a native of his county, on May 27, 1794, and they had a large family of ten children: seven sons and three daughters. Samuel Mosby was a devout member of the Episcopal Church and a respected leader in his community.

Samuel Mosby became a successful farmer and landowner. He owned more than 1500 acres of land in Hanover County, where he built a brick mansion called Bienvenue (meaning welcome in French) for his family. He also constructed a barn, a stable, a kitchen, and a spinning house on his estate. He grew tobacco, wheat, corn, and other crops on his land.

Samuel Mosby died on January 31, 1829, in Hanover County, at the age of 62. He had been suffering from poor health for several years before his death. His obituary was published in the Richmond Enquirer on February 12, 1829. It praised his exemplary life and his devotion to his church. He left behind his wife Mary and nine of his children.
