Eda was born in 1899 in Kodnya in the Russian Empire. Her Russian, Yiddish and Hebrew names were all Eda. She also used the name Eda when she came to Canada.
Eda's father was a cattle dealer. Eda had 4 brothers: Voilka, Yankel, Chayim and Pinya, and one sister Mintzi. Pinya was murdered in Russia.
In Russia, Eda and her siblings were taught in their home by a teacher who would visit their town from time to time. She spoke Russian, Yiddish and Ukrainian.
Eda married Yasha (Jack) Furman in Russia and they then came together to Canada. They chose Winnipeg because Eda's brother Voilka, who in Winnipeg used the name Bill, had emigrated there earlier. Bill was the only other family memeber to come to Canada.
Eda had no trouble finding a job and started working at Monarch Overalls. She liked to sew, and made most of her own clothes, pillowcases and other bedding.
After a year of work, she and Jack had made enough money to buy their grocery store on Dufferin Avenue in Winnipeg.
Eda loved Jewish foods. She was a great cook.
Eda did not speak very much English, but she understood it well.
Jack and Eda sold the store in 1964 and moved in with their daughter Marion, her husband and their grandchildren.
Jack passed away in 1977.[1] Eda passed away in 1985. They are buried together in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery in Winnipeg. Eda has two great-grandchildren named after her.
