Sarah Violetta Leticia Munsel, known as Lett, was born on 4 September 1847 in McLeansboro, Hamilton, Illinois, United States as the third of eight children to Ira M. Munsel (1790-1857) and Martha Patsy Kitchen (1814-1895).

Residences

The family moved to Illinois before the birth of Washington in 1827.[1] Ira purchased his first 80 acres in Hamilton County, Illinois in 1830 and his last in 1844.

Marriages and Family

Lett married twice.

  4. Ella Susan Webb was born on 24 March 1888 in McLeansboro, Hamilton, Illinois, United States. She married 1) Arthur Franklin Thompson (1885-1917) on 4 September 1907 in Hamilton County, Illinois and 2) Thomas Stewart Cantrell (born 1881) in about 1921. Ella died on 27 January 1970 in Carmi, White, Illinois, United States.

Lett's husband James Brown died on 13 April 1876. She had already lost her twin boys and daughter Nettie between 1873 and 1874. Her daughter Sarah died in 1878. She was left with one surviving child from the Brown marriage and returned home to live on the family farm with her widowed mother.

The 1880 census shows that she was widowed and on the census with her widowed mother and siblings together with her daughter Mary Brown.

By 1900 she has married Eijah Webb, a farmer, and they had four children together by 1900.

Elijah Webb died in January 1908 leaving her a widow for the second time. The 1910 census reflects that information. Her son Samuel and his wife are on the farm and he runs it. She says she has her own income, but she is listed as head of household.

She moved sometime after 1910 (haven't located 1920 census for her) to live with her cousin, Charles Thompson in Crook, Hamilton, Illinois. The 1930 census is the last found for her.

Death and Burial

Lett died on 6 September 1930 in Crook, Hamilton, Illinois, United States at the age of 83. She was buried on 8 September in the Munsell Cemetery, Thurber, Hamilton, Illinois where her first husband and little children of that marriage were also buried. Find A Grave: Memorial #9076345

PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE the placement of the reference and footnote notations. 1/2 of the census data and other is lost if you do. No rule that I know of that says you have to have no space between "Sources" and References or can't have footnotes. And yes, I have read the "Help" page. Thank you.
