Biography

William (Mure) Mure XIth of Rowallan is a member of Clan Muir.
European Aristocracy
Sir William Mure was a member of the aristocracy in Scotland.

Son of John Mure, of Rowallan and Marion Cuninghame [Cunningham], of Cuninghamhead [1]

He married, firstly Jonet Maxwell, of Newark[2] and they had 6 children (3 boys and 3 girls) including:

  1. William, heir[2]
  2. John, of Blacklaw, m. Helen Wallace, dau. of SIbilla Stewart 21 Aug 1604[2]
  3. dau, m. Langschaw[2]
  4. dau, m. Skeldone Campbell[2]

He married secondly, in 1605, Elizabeth Kennedy (Makgill/McGill), Lady of Cullman. According to the terms of the contract, dated 4 April and 15 May 1605, Lady Cullman was granted a life-rent from the estate of Rowallan. Following the marriage, the charter was confirmed, 20 June 1616, and Elizabeth McGill is described as Lady Rowallan senior, spouse of William senior, on 9 October, that year, when her rights in Dalmusternock and Tannahill were still reserved. William junior was already heir apparent in 1605, and by 1616, there were at least three generations alive, William senior, his son, William junior, and his son William, heir apparent, who was already married to Anna Dundas- indeed, the next William may have gladdend his great-grandfather's dying days. In 1605, William senior and Elizabeth McGill were to have Dalmasternock with the mansion, but in 1616, this went to William, heir apparent, and his wife; probably, even by 1605, the main mansion, the fortalice of Rowallan, was occupied by William junior and his wife.[3]
