Elizabeth was born in 1760 of an originally Scottish Quaker family in Magheragall Parish, Lisburn, County Antrim, in Ireland. She was the daughter of Joseph Murray and Margery Hogg.

Elizabeth married Edward Carroll according to the rites of the Society of Friends, in a Quaker ceremony in 1775 and they had nine children born in Ireland, one of whom died in childhood.

They lived in the old, stone homestead built by Edward's father, who died in 1780. The house was named Hollymount, and located in the townlands of Creenagh in the parish of Magheramesk in County Antrim, near the village of Moira in County Down, on the road between Belfast and Lisburn.

They had 9 children of whom one died in infancy. And in 1801 they sold the lease on the family home to Isaac Bell, a relative of Elizabeth's late mother in law, and they moved to the United States with 8 surviving children, and Elizabeth's brother Jonas Murray. They arrrived in Philadelphia on 21st May 1801. They settled in East Liverpool, Ohio and their youngest child Anne, was born in the United States in 1802, completing the family.

After the split in the Society of Friends in 1809, Elizabeth and her husband who were 'disunited' by traditional Quakers, joined the Liberal Branch of Friends, becoming what the traditional or 'Orthodox' Friends called 'Hicksites'. Their Bell relatives back in Ireland remained orthodox Quakers. Elizabeth and family moved in 1809 from East Liverpool to New Garden, Columbiana County and attended the Middleton Monthly Quaker Meeting. [1]

In the census of 1820, Elizabeth was living at Columbiana, with her husband and children and they were engaged in agriculture. [2]In 1830 they were still living the same way. [3]

Elizabeth passed away in 1835.
