John Nelson died of disease during the United States Civil War.

John L. Nelson was born on 14 Jul 1846 in Ohio. He was the son of Jonathan Nelson and Mary (Pettigrew) Nelson.[1][2]

At the time of the 1850 Census, the family was living in Poland Township, Mahoning County, Ohio. His father worked there as a carpenter.[2]

At the time of the 1860 Census, they were living in Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio. His father was working there as a farmer.[3]

He joined the 57th Ohio Infantry Regiment on 06 Jan 1862. He was assigned as a Private with Company G. He died due to disease on 07 Mar 1862 at the Post Hospital at Camp Chase, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.[4]

He was initially buried at Green Lawn Cemetery.[4] He was later reburied at Vickers Cemetery, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio.[1]

Research Notes

He had a younger brother, about 2 years younger, who was named Jonathan Nelson. Somewhat confusing, but they both appear on the 1850 and 1860 Census documents.
