Henry was born on Whenua Hou (Codfish Island) on 17 September 1829. He was the son of George Newton and Wharetutu Tahuna and one of 13 siblings:

Henry married Maata Kotahtahi (1829-1886) on 23 April 1853.

They had two children, Nereta "Henrietta" Paraone and Pouaru Horomona (1856–1913).

Henry passed away in 1904.

Harold was born in Portugal. They had one son: Mohi Te Atahikoia Kupa . Maata then married Henry Newton .
