Obituary

MRS JOYCE (JOY) LAVINIA KAIN (aged 82) After a period of ill health, Joy Kain passed away at her home in Boswells Close, Bere Regis, Dorset and after cremation at Poole Crematorium, her ashes were interred in the graveyard of the church in Bere Regis. It was there that her husband Jim, and daughter, Valerie, had been laid to rest some years before. Joy Kain came to live in Bere Regis when the bungalows of Boswells Close were first built. She and Jim had come on his retirement from a lifetime’s work with the Prudential. They were both Londoners, but adapted well to life in Dorset. Jim was outward going and soon joined the Royal British Legion, and became a member of the Drax Hall Committee. Joy was a shy, private person who lived for her family, but she was persuaded to join the Autumn Leaves when it first started, and indeed became a trouper in the song and dance group “The Gadabouts”. But that was some years ago, and as the years took their toll, she retired more and more into her own house, where she had the companionship of her son Ian. It was Ian who cared for her during her last few months of illness. When we only know the old person in our community, we can forget that that person was once young and vibrant, so it was lovely to be reminded that Joy had been a considerable athlete. She had many medals at County level. Then after meeting Jim, who was a keen cyclist, she took this up and became an excellent competitor. The death of her daughter, Valerie at the age of 36 was a bitter blow to her, and it came on top of Jim’s early death six years before. Joy was one of five brothers and sisters, and it was so good to have four of them present at the Crematorium. We offer condolences to her daughter Beverley and son Ian on their sad loss. May she now rest in peace.
