Alfred was born in 1879. He was the son of John Norris and Caroline Bidmead. [1] He passed away in 1916 age 37 [2]
Rifleman A. J. Norris (killed in action) was the son of Mr., John Norris, an old Wellington resident, but now living at Eltham, Taranaki. Rifleman Norris was born at Tinakori-road, Wellington, and was about 37 years of age. He left for the firing line in the Ist Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigajde. Before he enlisted he was bushfalling. and was a well-known bushman throughout the Taranaki district.[3]
Aj Norris, also known as Alf, served in the Army during World War 1 (service number 23/1135) He was a Rifleman in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion He gave his next of kin as John Norris (father), of Eltham, Taranaki, He embarked 9 October 1915 AWMM from Wellington, aboard HMNZT 30 or HMNZT 31 or HMNZT 32 or HMNZT 33 or HMNZT 34 the vessels Maunganui or Tahiti or Aparima or Navua or Warrimoo with D Company of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion He was Killed in Action, 15 September 1916 at the Somme, in Northern France His name appears on the Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial, in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, at Longueval, Somme, France [4]
