Biography

Private James Notestine served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Mar 31, 1864

James was born about 1847. He is the son of Levi Notestine and Phoebe Thrapp. James served with his brother during the civil war in the 11th Missouri infantry regiment, Co. E. He enlisted on 31 MAR 1864 when he was 16. His father Levi had to sign his contract to give permission. Prior to that time he enlisted in the infantry at age 16, he still served with the Missouri 11th infantry. But due to his age, he served as a musician. His brother William died of his wounds he received in the battle of Nashville in Dec of 1864. James survived the war and was mustered out on Januray 15th,1866.

According to James' service record, he fought with the 11th Missouri infantry in the following battles.

1. Battle of Tupelo, Mississippi, on the 13th, 14th and 15th of July, 1864.
2. Brentwood Hills, Tennessee. December 15th & 16th, 1864.
3. The seige of Spanish fort in Alabama, March & April, 1865.







At the time of James' death he was working as a switchman at the Missouri Pacific railroad. It was there, on December 31st, 1899, that he was killed in a train accident. The burial certificate says the location of the accident was between 17th and 18th streets. Possible location: railroad yard near 17th and 18th st.

According to the burial certificate (as seen in this profile) James died of shock on Dec 31st, 1889 as a result of a railroad accident.
