Biography

Mary was born in 1857. She passed away in 1948.

Molly O'GAR is a colorful ancestor of mine.

I cannot demonstrate whether Molly and Sam SHUMAR were married, but I assume they were, sometime before her first child was born in 1876. Family lore says that sometime after my ancestor Mary Agnes SHUMAR was born in 1878, Molly abandoned Sam SHUMAR and married another cousin of mine, Emanuel KEFFER. Sam remarried to Anne SHAFFER.

The 1870 Fayette County census indicates that Molly's father was foreign born. The 1880 census shows that father was born in Ireland, mother in Pennsylvania. Mary Jane herself was shown as born in West Virginia. The 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses show Mary Jane born in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. I do not yet know which is correct. The 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses shows Mary J. KEFFER born in Ohio. I suspect Ohio is actually her place of birth, and if I had to bet I would guess she was born in the Cincinnati area. There were O'GARs in this area during the mid 1800s. One family source, however, shows she was born around Defiance, OH. I cannot explain this reference. In 1900, 1910 and 1920, her father is from Ireland and her mother is from Pennsylvania. But in 1930, Mary's parents were both said to be born in Pennsylvania. I suspect Ireland is correct for Thomas O'GARA.

In 1930 Mary Jane is listed as a widow. This likely refers to her second husband Emanuel KEFFER, who died in 1925. Samuel SHUMAR, her first husband, died in 1922. In 1930 Mary Jane is listed with her son Harry (Harrison KEFFER).
