Biography

Arthur A. Oakes was born on 08 Feb 1894 in Dennison Township, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. He was the fifth of eight children born to Elizabeth Schrader and Richard Oakes.[1] At the time of the 1900 census he was six and lived in Dennison Township, Luzerne, Pennsylvania with his parents and seven siblings.[2] In 1910 he was 16 and boarded with the Charles Poltrok family in Dennison Township. He worked as a farm laborer and was listed as "working out." He did not attend school.[3]

On 05 Jun 1917, Arthur and his brother Richard registered for the draft at North Parsons, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. He was described as tall, medium build, with gray eyes and light brown hair. He was employed the Delaware and Hudson Coal Company as a mine laborer.[4] He began military service at Camp Meade, Maryland on 01 Nov 1917.[5] On 12 Jan 1918 he boarded the ship "Mount Vernon" at Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey and sailed to France[6] where he served for the duration of his service during World War I.[5] He sailed aboard the ship "Texan" from Bordeaux, France to Brooklyn, New York[7] and was discharged from the Army on 28 Apr 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey.[5]

After the War, Arthur worked for the railroad. From 1920-1922 he reported that he worked as a fireman on the railroad.[8][9] In 1942 he stated that he worked for the Reading Railway Company in Tamaqua, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania.[10]

Arthur and Edna Davis Wedger, a widow, applied for a marriage license on 29 May 1922 in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. They were married in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, and Rev. Horace A. Shiffer performed the wedding ceremony.[9] The couple raised the two children from her first marriage, Elias and Edna Wedger,[11] and they had five daughters:[12]

In Apr 1942 Arthur registered for the draft and was described as five feet eight inches tall, weighing 140 pounds, with a light complexion, gray hair, gray eyes, and scars on his left arm.[10] Arthur died on 16 May 1969 at Coaldale Hospital, Coaldale, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania. He was buried on 19 May 1969 in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Girardville, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania.[13][14]
