Biography

Ozias was born about 1710 and baptised on the 12th November 1710 at All Saints, Whitstable, Kent, England, the son of Nathaniel Oakham and Ann Oakham[1]

On the 5th June 1741, William Oakam, son of Ozius Oakam and Anne Oakam, was baptised at St. Alphege, Seasalter, Kent, England[2] however this entry does not appear in the original register.

A marriage licence was issued on the 25th September 1744 for Ozias Ougham, widower of Seasalter, to marry Sarah Slater, single woman of Seasalter, at Seasalter[3].

On the 27th September 1744, Little Ozias Oakham, and Sarah Slater, both of Seasalter were married by licence at St. Alphege, Seasalter, Kent, England. Sarah was his first wife's sister...and now very pregnant[4].

Ozias was occupied as a dredger[5].

His wife Sarah died in 1777 and was buried on the 9th November 1777 at St. Alphege, Seasalter, England[6].

Ozias Ougham wrote his will on the 1st June 1779. He named his sons Nathaniel Ougham, John Ougham, daughter Susanna Ougham, now the wife of John Blackman of Whitstable, carpenter. Daughter Ann Anderson, wife of John Anderson[5]

Research Notes

A marriage licence was issued on the 3rd November 1739 for an Ozias Ougham, bachelor of Seasalter, to marry Elizabeth Philpott, widow, at Seasalter[8].

On the 3rd November 1739 Ozias Ougham married Eliz. Philpot at St. Alphege, Seasalter, Kent[9].

It is not certain whether the above marriage was for the same Ozias who married Sarah Slater.

Whitstable Tithe award schedule - signed 19th June 1840, available online at http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Maps/WHI/02.htm, lists Charlotte Anderson, the heirs of John Anderson, and Ozias Ougham, among many others. This may indicate a descendant. N.B. This link does not lead directly to the actual Tithe. At Seasalter: Owner: Hosiah Oughan Occupier: Robert Feakins; owner: Charlotte Anderson Occupier: Joseph Daniels. At Whitstable: Owner: Charlotte Anderson Occupier: Laslett and others; Owner: Ozias Ougham Occupier: Himself and others; Owner: Heirs of John Anderson Occupier: Anderson. So no link between the Ougham family and the Anderson family suggested in the Tithe award schedule of Whitstable.

The following census details do NOT match with this Osias Ougham (1710-1783) as he would not have been alive in 1861
