Disputed Lineages, Seneschals of Dol

This profile is affected by conflicting lineage provided in 1901 by J. Horace Round [1] and a century later in 200 by Paul A. Fox. [2] The two conflicting lineages and this profile's place in them are shown at Space: Round and Fox and the Seneschals of Dol.

Disputed Lineage as it affected this Profile

Round's scheme is that the first Seneschal, whom he calls Alan, had three sons -- first Alan, then Flaald, then Rhiwallon. Under the Round scenario, Alan was the oldest, born, say 1050. Assuming births at two year intervals, Flaald would be born 1052 under this scenario and Rhiwallon 1054.

As shown at Space: Round and Fox and the Seneschals of Dol in Fox's scheme, Rhiwallon is one of three brothers, but a generation later. It is Flaald, son of the first Seneschal, now called Hato, who has three sons, Alan FitzFlaald, Flaald FitzFlaald, and Rivallon, monk of St. Florent at Dol

1054 Estimated Birth Year

Rhiwallon's estimated birth year in the Round scenario is 1054, following older brothrs born 1050 and 1052. The year 1054 can be made to work in Fox's scenario as well.

Parentage

J. Horace Round presented Rhiwallon as one of three sons of Alan (or Hato) de Dol, the first Dapifer of Dol: Alan (the Crusader), Flaald and Rhiwallon.

In Paul Fox's presentation, Rhiwallon is the grandson of Hato (or Alan) de Dol, and one of three sons of Flaald: Hato de Dol also includes Rhiwallon without further comment.

While Rhiwallon does not play a major role, his presence is broadly acknowledged.

1080 Admittance to St. Florent Monastery at Dol

Rhiwallon of Dol became a monk at St. Florent. [1]

Rivallon was a monk of St. Florent at Dol. [2]

As "Alanus Siniscallus," his brother Alan witnessed the foundation charters of the priory of Mesuoit, (ante 1080) and himself gave it rights with the consent of "Fledaldus frater ejus" the monks, in return , admitting his brother Rhiwallon to their fraternity."[1]

In the Chartulary of the Abey of St Florent we find in 1080 and again in 1086 'Alanus Senescallus' or "Alanus Dapifer Dolensis,' witnessing grants of land to the Abbey, of which he was himself a benefactor, as is proved by a deed (ante 1080), to which his brother Fledaldus consents, granting to the Abbey a site for a church.[3]
