George was born in 1826 and baptised in the parish church of St.John the baptist, Beeston in Nottinghamshire. He was the son of Joseph Ogle and Rebecca Clarke and his parents were unmarried at the time of his baptism which is probably why he used the name 'George Clarke Ogle' throughout his life, his mother's birth name being used as a middle name.[1][2] His parents married nearly two years after his birth. There may be a valid reason for this as in some instances in the 18th century it was not uncommon for an apprentice or servant to be denied permission to marry without their employers consent. The penalty for not complying with the demands of your employer could be that your employment was terminated without recompense.
By 1841 the Census records that his parents have provided him with eight siblings and are living in the village of Pentrich, Derbyshire. This may be nearer to where his father is employed as an engineer and the nearest and newest Iron works is sited at Butterley, Derbyshire.[3] Although there is no occupation recorded for George on this census it would not be uncommon for a lad of fifteen years old to be employed in some capacity to assist with household income.
On Christmas day, 25th December 1848, George Clarke Ogle married a local girl named Ann Standley (Stanley) at the Ebenezer Wesleyan Chapel in Ripley, Derbyshire.[4]
The census of 1851[5] records that George and his new wife Ann have had a daughter Elizabeth Ogle, born 1850 [6] and are living with the grandparents of Ann Stanley, William Saxton and his wife Anna (Hannah) Saxton. The house they all live in is in Butterley Hill, Pentrich, Derbyshire and George Clarke Ogle is employed as an Engine Turner.
The Butterley Company was the largest employer in that area at that time and the company also invested in housing for it's workforce.[7]
By 1871 the census[8] records that George Clarke Ogle and his wife Ann have produced a family of six children and they are now living in Church Street, right in the centre of Ripley. George has a business as a grocer and implement dealer.[9]
In 1881 the census records that George Clarke Ogle and his family are now living at Chapel Street, Ripley.Derbyshire[10]just north of the centre of Ripley.
George died 21 January 1908 at his home in Ripley, Derbyshire.[11][12]
He is buried in Ripley Cemetery Derbyshire. His will was delivered for Probate and this was granted 27 May 1908, London.[13][14]
