Biography

John was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on 13 July 1725, the son of William Olney and Alice Dexter. He is said to have married Catherine Jenks about 1750 in Providence, but no record of their marriage has been found. They apparently had their first few children in Providence before moving to Sackville, Nova Scotia (now New Brunswick) about 1759.

John and numerous other Olneys were granted land in Sackville around 1768. It appears that the man identified as John "Senior" in Sackville may have been this John's uncle. That would make this John "Junior."

The Sackville township book includes a listing of names and dates of birth for eight children of John. This list was evidently made long after the fact - all of the entries are in the same hand, and other families have birth dates as late as 1822 listed. The source and purpose of the list is unclear, but the data is sufficiently voluminous and detailed that it can probably be considered reliable in the general sense.

It is difficult to trace John's later life due to the presence in Sackville of multiple men with the same name. However, on 27 June 1788, a man named John Olney sold land in Sackville to Zelotes Olney, known to be a son of this John Olney. If we assume this transaction to have occurred between father and son, then John must have died sometime after that date.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

William and John Olney migrated from RI to Sackville, Nova Scotia, now in New Brunswick in 1761, 1763 respectively. They moved on after so don't appear in census reports after 1770. They are also recorded in Planters and Pioneers.

Olney-292 and Olney-47 appear to represent the same person because: one death date is estimated.
