Biography

Sarah Esther Orr, youngest of the eleven known children of Thomas Orr and Agnes Smart, was born in Pleasant Ridge, Saint Patrick Parish, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, 19 Sep 1852.[2] New Brunswick was at the time a British Colony, and it remained so until 1867, becoming that year one of Canada's four founding provinces.[3] As for Pleasant Ridge, a tiny, rural community along the New Brunswick's Magaguadavic River,[4] it was part of Saint Patrick Parish until 1856, when Dumbarton Parish was formed from Saint Patrick's northern half.[5]

Sarah had six elder sisters and four elder brothers: Margaret, who was born in about 1834,[7] Mary, born in 1835,[8] Ellen, born in 1837,[9] Agnes, born in about 1839,[10] Elizabeth, born in 1840,[11] James, born in 1842,[12] David, born in 1843,[13] Peter, born in 1846.[14] Hannah, born in 1848,[15] and Thomas, born in 1850.[16].

Sarah's father did not survive her 1852 birth by long, dying in Pleasant Ridge, 16 Jul 1854, at age 46.[17]

Sarah lost two siblings in the 1860s: her sister, Margaret, died in Pomeroy Ridge, New Brunswick, in 1862, at age 27,[7] and her brother, David, died in Pleasant Ridge in 1866, at age 22).[13]

Sarah's sister, Ellen, died in Alexander, Maine, in 1882, at age 46.[9] In the first two decades of the 1900s, Sarah lost four more siblings: her sister, Mary, died in Bancroft, Maine, in 1901, at age 65,[8] her brother, James, died in Wilson County, Kansas, in 1913, at age 70,[12] her sister, Elizabeth, died in Seattle, Washington, in 1919, at age 78,[11] and her brother, Peter, died in Seattle in 1920, at age 74.[14]

Sarah and her siblings, Thomas and Hannah, survived into the Great Depression. Sarah lost her brother, Thomas, in Saint Andrew, New Brunswick, in 1934, at age 83.[16] Sarah died in Leverville, St. David Parish, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, 22 May 1934, at age 84.[18] She's buried in Rolling Dam Baptist Cemetery, in Rollingdam, Charlotte County, New Brunswick.[18]

Sarah was survived by at least one (and perhaps two - Agnes's death date isn't known[10]) of her eleven known siblings: her sister, Hannah, who died in New Brunswick in 1942, at about age 94.[15]
