Biography

Nelson Jasper Orvis was born in 1841 in Elk Creek, Erie County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was the youngest child of Francis Marion Orvis (1795-1884) and his first wife, Zeruah (Miller) Orvis (1798-1874). ^[1]

Nelson J. Orvis was a veteran of the US Civil War (Union Army). He served in Company "G," 13th Wisconsin Infantry. He had enlisted in Green County, Wisconsin, on 23 Sep 1861. He was honorably mustered out on 31 May 1865. ^[2]

On 2 September 1866, he married Edna Loretta Hooker, 1850–1876, in Monroe, Green County, Wisconsin, USA. ^[3] The couple had 3 children:

1. Cora Edith Orvis, 1868–1947
2. Ada Zeruah Orvis, 1871–1904
3. Frank Ernest Orvis, 1873–1931

Edna Loretta Orvis passed away on 19 November 1876 at Brodhead, Green County, Wisconsin, USA. Nelson J. Orvis remarried to Sarah Richards, 1839–1923; born in Cornwall, England, U.K., on 13 October 1877 in Green County, Wisconsin, USA. ^[4] They had no children together.

On the 1880 US Census, he was recorded as 38 years old, married to Sarah Orvis, age 40; born in England. They were living in Kirwin (city) Township, Phillips, Kansas, United States, with his 3 children, ages 11, 9, and 7 years old. Nelson J. Orvis was a "Cooper" and the Census-taker noted that he was "Sick". ^[5]

His illness was not explained, and it may have resulted from wounds, or a disease contracted during his Civil War service. Alas, he passed away on 20 April 1882, having returned to his parents' farm in Brodhead, Green County, Wisconsin. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead, Rock County, Wisconsin, USA. ^[6]
