Martha Malinda Orvis was born in New York state, USA, on 8 April 1831. She was the daughter of Francis Orvis and Zeruah Miller.
In about 1847, she married John T Bowen, 1825–1905. No marriage record has been found and it may have been in Kane County, Illinois, or in Monroe County, Wisconsin, as that is where their first child: Mary Jane Bowen, was born on 10 August 1848. The couple had 1 son and 4 daughters between 1848 and 1871. After the Civil War ended in 1865, they returned to Illinois from Wisconsin and their last 2 children were born in Schuyler County, Illinois, USA.
On the 1 June 1900 US Census, John and Martha Bowen were recorded as 75 and 69 years old respectively. They were living with their 38-year-old son: James E. Bowen, in a house, not a farm, that they owned in Macomb City, Mcdonough County, Illinois, USA. John Bowen was "Retired" and his unmarried son was a "Composer". [1]
John T. Bowen died on 2 June 1905 at 82 years old; his gravestone states he was a Union Army veteran of the US Civil War. He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Macomb, Mcdonough County, Illinois, USA; Lot 84, Block 2. [2] His wife survived his passing for another 8 years. Martha Malinda (Orvis) Bowen passed away on 31 March 1913 at 81 years old. She was buried next to her late husband at Oakwood Cemetery, Macomb, Mcdonough County, Illinois, USA; Lot 84, Block 2. [3]
