Biography

1852 Birth According to a copy of Eliza Jane's Birth Certificate, she was born on 28th July 1852 in Kenn. Her parents were William Osborn and Ann Osborn formerly Burdon. Her actual name was Peardon.

1861 Census In the 1861 census Eliza is conveniently listed in Kenn, Devon with her Uncle John Elliott and Grandmother Mary Elliott [1]

1869 Marriage On July 17th, 1869, Frederick married Eilza Jane Osborn at St Andrews Church in Kenn, Devon. A copy of the marriage certificate has Frederick aged 20 and Eliza aged 18. Frederick is a Mason and his father is named as William. Eliza's father is also named William. Witnesses are John Anstey and Charlotte Osborn (probably Eliza's sister).

1871 Census In 1871 Eliza and husband Frederick and new-born son William are living in Kennford, Devon. The surname has been transcribed as Toyer. [2]

1873 Emigration In 1873 Frederick, Eliza, William and Louisa emigrated to New Zealand on the Cospatrick [3] A number of quite frightening gales were encountered on the way. [4] The Cospatrick arrived in Dunedin on the 6th July , and then the Tozers travelled on to Lyttelton via the "Lady Bird" arriving on the 9th July. [5]
