John was born about 1844, probably on his parents' farm in Rock Island County, Illinois. As a child he moved with his parents to Pottawattamie County, Iowa, where they lived in Kanesville (Council Bluffs), then Center Township and Knox Township near Avoca. He was deaf from a childhood illness.
John was married three times: to Calista Chase (1846-1874) in 1870; to Lena Hallenbeck in 1875; and to Emily (Pierce) Mikesell (1847-1883), widow of Independence Mikesell, in 1877.
John died 26 December 1897 at Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa. He is buried at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Oakland, Iowa. His grave has no marker.
