Biography

George Panton, the son of William Panton and Margaret Downie, was born about 1826 at Scotland. He was baptised on 5 January 1826 at Dundonald, Ayr, Scotland.

In 1851, he was living at Argyllshire, Scotland.^[1]

Marriage 1
He married Hannah (née Thomas) Jones in 1858 at Denbighshire, Wales.^{[2] [3]}

His occupation was as Officer of Inland Revenue Excise. In 1871, he was recorded with his wife, Hannah, in their Welshpool, Mongomeryshire household.^[4]

In 1881, he was recorded with his wife, Hannah, in their Wrexham, Denbighshire household. George Panton's neice, Jane G Panton, age 24, born Scotland, was also in the household.^[5] Hannah (née Thomas) Panton died in 1882.

Marriage 2
He married Sarah Johnson in 1885 at Wrexham, Denbighshire.^{[6] [7]}

In 1891, he and his wife, Sarah, and son, George G Panton, aged 4, were living at Wrexham, Denbighshire.^[8]

I have in fact now seen the marriage certificate of George (1826) and his first wife Hannah Thomas, where his father William is described as a 'house contractor'; this would fit with my 3rd great grandfather as a master mason.

What I did with George was to trace him back from 1881 to 1841 via the census returns for Wales and Scotland. I'm certain there can't be that many George Pantons in either country who were also Inland Revenue Officers - not an easy post to obtain in those days. I also obtained (see my e-mail 8/5/10) copies via the National Archives site of letters re his Inland Revenue post which also confirmed his birth in Aberdeen and residence in Elgin 1841-1847, although here again there is no birth record. I have since then seen the will of William Douglas - with whom George was living at Milnfield, Elgin in 1841 - which reveals not only that this George was a Revenue Officer but also a close relationship with the family of one John Garland - this latter is the Garland connection with your family. Unfortunatly he doesn't state his exact relationship to George.
