When William was 34 he was on the crew of the Lytham lifeboat Charles Biggs on the night of 9th December 1886 and helped rescue 12 sailors from the stricken Barque Mexico. Two of his brothers Edward and James, plus a nephew John William and a cousin Edward Jnr were also on the crew of the Charles Biggs.
