THE PARSHALL FAMILY
Jonas Pershall probably went first to Virginia, the prosperous Colony with which his Uncle Edmund was There are, unfortunately, no records of Jonas in America, nor is the name of his wife known.
He had a son, James, who was born in either Virginia, or the other colony of New York, about 1630 to 1640, The first record of this James is a deed dated December 1 2th, 1679, which shows that he was then a resident of the Isle of Wight or Gardiner's Island, which was then included within the limits of the township of Easthampton.
The deed ^ referred to reads as follows : —
' This indenture made ye twelfth of December in the two and thirtyeth yeare of ye reighn of our Soveraigne Lord Charles ye Second by the grace of God King of England etc. and in ye yeare of our Lord Christ one thousand six hundred seventy-nine. Jonas Pershale may have married in 1639 in England to Mary Willemson, b. 1601, Woerden, Holland. She is buried South-End, Burying Ground, Suffolk, NY, date 1665. Mary is also associated with a prior marriage to Lion Gardiner 10 Jul 1635 in Woerdon, Holland. No changes -- Mary is still the grandmother-in-law (not wife) of James Parshall; and nobody has offered any shred of evidence connecting James Parshall to Jonas Parshall (the only "evidence" this unsupported claim is based on is that there was a Jonas Pershall operating as a trader in Virginia at about the same time as James was known to be living in New York -- there is no evidence that they ever met, much less that they were father and son, and the geography works against them.

(conclusion) So although many people who don't understand the Dutch naming practices have called Lion Gardiner's wife "Mary Willemsen", that was never her name.
I'm sorry to always be so contrary about the proposed pedigrees for James Parshall but I shall continue to point out the impossibilities that are being circulated. No matter how many times they are published on this list or on web genealogies, they *are*not*true*.
Don't we want to know who our ancestors REALLY were? Are we really satisfied with a sloppy fairy tale just so we can have more names in the database?
Please, list members, don't copy known falsehoods into your databases.

A related point: Mary was Dutch. The Dutch at this period did not generally have inherited surnames, but used patronymics. A child (male or female) used a second name based on his or her father's name: If a man named Gerret had a son named Pieter, the child would be named Pieter Gerretse ("Peter, the son of Gerret"). The "Gerretse" would not be passed on to Pieter's son Willem; instead, Willem would be called Willem Pieterse ("William, the son of Peter").
Mary's father was named Diricke Willemse (or Willemsen), meaning "Derek, the son of William". This patronymic would *not* have been passed on to Mary, because she was *not* "the son of William". Instead, she would have been known as Mary Dirickese, ("Mary, daughter of Derek").

Yet James Parshall, whoever his parents were, is believed to have been born about 1640; no known source claims any earlier birthdate for him.
How could James Parshall have been born to Mary in 1640 when Mary was married to Lion from 1636 to 1663? He could *not* have been born to Mary; this claimed parentage is false.
Mary was the grandmother of James's wife; no known source provides the slightest evidence that Mary was any blood relation to James Parshall -- she was his grandmother-in-law.

<<Jonas married Mary Willemson. They had a son named James Gent Otiow Parshall or Pershale.>>
This supposed family grouping has appeared in a number of web genealogies. It is false.
Consider: The pedigrees which claim that Jonas Pershale* was the father of James Parshall also claim that Jonas's supposed wife Mary was was also the wife of Lion Gardiner.
[*if Jonas existed at all; I renew my plea for evidence that James Parshall's father was Jonas]
Mary was the wife of Lion Gardiner at least by 1635; we have abundant evidence that their son, David Gardiner, was born 19 April 1636 in Fort Saybrook, Connecticut. (continued)
