Biography

Annie Paterson, who sometimes goes by the name “Anna,” is born in Ontario, Canada on August 8, 1874. She is the daughter of James Paterson (1793-1874) and Jane Davidson (1834-1899). Her father had come to Upper Canada from Scotland in 1820 and was known as Laird of Bonnie Braes. (Ontario was Upper Canada in 1820.) He settled on Lot 4, Concession 5 in Toronto Township, Home District (in 1851 this would become Peel County). Bonnie Braes was the 100 acres immediately to the west of the first house built in Streetsville. This, presumably, is where Annie is born. Her mother, Jane Davidson, was from England and she was James Paterson’s second, and much younger, wife.

Annie’s father dies in 1874, the same year Annie is born. Shortly after, her mother moves into town (Streetsville) and lives on Thomas Street with the widow of Thomas Paterson. Thomas Paterson (1820-1860) was Annie’s and the street was named after him. Her mother then takes the remaining children and moves north to the town of Durham in Grey County – this is about 120 kilometres north of Streetsville. On August 19, 1875 Jane Davidson marries a widower, the 67-year old Alexander Glendinning. For some reason, the couple did not live together for long or else (perhaps) the marriage didn’t last because in the 1881 census, Jane Davidson is living in the town of Durham with her four children, including the seven-year old Annie, and her surname is shown as “Patterson” (sic). The census record indicates she is a widow. Alexander Glendinning, who is 74 years old in the 1881 census, is living on a farm in Egremont Township south of Durham with his bachelor son. The census record shows him as married.

In 1891 Annie is living in Toronto with her mother, a widow, her sister Jean and her brother-in-law (Robert Craig Nicholson) and she is 17-years old.

Annie marries the much older Frederick Cooke (1849-1917) in Toronto on December 28, 1892. This is Frederick’s third marriage. Frederick was born in Canada but in 1879 he had moved to the United States. He is a travelling salesman selling drugstore products all over the western United States. Before moving to the United States, Frederick owned a drugstore in Canada. And in what has to be a remarkable coincidence, Annie’s older sister, Agnes, also married someone with the surname “Cooke,” who was also born in Canada, who also moved to the United States. And who also was a druggist in a drug store. Two people from Canada with the surname Cooke involved with drugstores when they move to the United States. There does not appear to be a family relationship between these two people.

Annie and Frederick leave for the United States shortly after the wedding. (We know this because the U.S. 1900 census record shows Annie immigrated in 1892.)

Annie and Frederick are found living in Minneapolis in the United States 1900 census – Annie’s first name is shown as “Anna.” There are two children living with them: an 18-year old Fredrick E. Cooke born in Illinois, and a five-year old Frederick A. Cooke born in Minnesota. The first child is from on of Frederick’s earlier marriages. This census record describes Frederick Cooke (the father) as a travelling salesman.

The couple are still in Minneapolis in the U.S. 1910 census and Annie now has two children: a 14-year old Frederick A. and an 8-year old Jean M. Annie again is shown as “Anna.” Both children were born in Minnesota. This census record shows the husband, Frederick Cooke, born in Canada in 1850 with his father born in England and his mother born in Ireland.

Frederick dies on July 2, 1917 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota and he is buried in the Lakeview cemetery in Minneapolis. (St. Paul is on the other side of the river from Minneapolis.)

The 46-year old Annie is living in St Paul in the U.S. 1920 census, with her surname spelt “Kooke.” Both of her children are still with her: Fred Kooke (24) and June M Kooke (18).

In the 1930 census the 55-year old widow, Annie, is living in Bluffton, Indiana with her daughter, Jean Arnold, her son-in-law, Albert Arnold, and her granddaughter, the seven-year old Margaret D. Arnold. Bluffton is about 40 kilometres south of Fort Wayne. In the 1940 census, Annie is still living with her daughter. They are now in Proviso, Illinois (1818 Third Ave. Proviso, Cook County, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago) and the census record indicates that, before Proviso, they lived in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.

Annie dies on May 1, 1943 in Maywood Cook County, Illinois. Maywood is in Chicago. Her address at the time was 1818 South Third Avenue. She is buried in Forest Home Cemetery.

Annie and Frederick have two children:

  • Frederick Arthur Paterson Cooke 1895-1973 + Irma Wilkinson 1903-1981
  • Jean M. Cooke c1904-? + Albert G. Arnold c1882-?

[1] The 1968 Paterson family tree shows Annie as 5th child of James Paterson & Jane Davidson, shows her spouse & 2 children – Frederick & Jean. One of the children (Jean) is married to an Albert Arnold (a critical clue to finding Annie in the US census).

[2] Directory for the County of Peel for 1873-4, by John Lynch: shows a Mrs Jane Paterson living on Thomas Street, Streetsville. This presumably is Jane Davidson and it appears she is living with the widow of Thomas H. Paterson. (The Directory doesn’t show children.)

The letter “M” appears to be in the column for marital status – ie, Alexander is married, although there is only he and his son in the household.

This last person is Annie Paterson (c1874>1940).
