George Patfield III was born on 18th January 1822 in Kissing Point (now Ryde), New South Wales, Australia. He was the firstborn child of George Patfield and Sarah (Small) Patfield.[1] He was a grandson of First and Second Fleeters; all four grandparents having arrived in the colony as convicts. George was christened on 15th June 1823 in St John's Church of England (Anglican), Parramatta, New South Wales.[2]
George, being not only the the eldest child but the eldest son, would have been expected to 'pull his weight' around the family farm. Firstly at Kissing Point until he was almost thirteen and then at Paterson, in the Hunter Valley north west of Newcastle.
George accidently drowned on 9th November 1839 at Paterson, aged 17 years.[3] and is buried at Glebe Cemetery, Maitland, New South Wales, Australia.[4]
