Biography

In the heraldry of the King families in England published by George Austin Morrison in 1910, [1] George King of Woodham Mortimer and Cold Norton, Essex was placed as a son of Thomas King of Purleigh, Essex, who married, as a widower, widow Anne ( ) Peachy on 09 Jul 1571 at Woodham Ferrers, Essex, [2] [3] [4] after her husband John Peachy had died and was buried on 17 Nov 1570. [5]

John Peachy and his son Latimer Peachy had been buried on 17 Nov 1570 at Woodham Ferrers, after his son John Peachy Jr. had been buried there on 03 Aug 1570, [6] before and after John Peachy Sr. had drafted his will on 10 Nov 1570. [7]

In the name of God, amen; the tenth day of November in the year of our Lord God one thousand five hundred seventy, and in the thirteenth year of the reign of our sovereign Lady Elizabeth, by the grace of God, Queen of England, France, and Ireland; defender of the faith, etc.

I John Peachy of Woodham Ferrers in the County of Essex; yeoman, of good and perfect memory; thanks be given to God, do ordain and make this my last will and testament in manner and form following; that is to say,

  • First I bequeath my soul to God Almighty, my only Savior and Redeemer, through whose mercy I trust to be saved, and my body to be buried in the church yard of Woodham Ferrers aforesaid.
  • Item: I give to Anne Ellis, my sister, one bullock to be delivered by my executors next Easter, at a price of 26 shillings, 8 pence.
  • Item: I give to the sons of her two brothers, Austin Ellis and Arthur Ellis, 3 pounds, 6 shillings, 8 pence to be paid to them at 20 years of age, and the one to be the heir of the other.
  • Item: I give to Prudence and Johan; my daughters, my house and land called Tissentones, and each of them a pair of canvas sheets.
  • Item: I give to Edward; my son, my house and land called Moses and by such other names as it appears in the copy, immediately after my the decease of my wife.
  • Item: I give to Edward; my son, my house with an orchard called Gunnels, immediately after the decease of my wife.
  • Item: I give the same Edward my spruce chest and an iron beam with scales, a lead and half a lead of weight.
  • Item: I give to William; my son, my hutch that my papers are kept in.
  • Item: I give to William; my son, my house and land called Sweetings; also known as Clovels.
  • Item: I give to Latimer; my son, one croft called Buttecroft and two other crofts lying against the highway, the one of this side Scoots tenement, and the other of the other side his tenement being copyhold, and to be surrendered to their use.
  • Item: I will that my brother John Camber shall be gardener to William and Latimer; my two youngest sons, to take up the rent of their land to their use, until such time as they come of age, and the same to be let at such reasonable rent as it is now, or hereafter may be, and he to be bound to make accounts to them at the age of twenty years, at which time it shall be due to them to receive the same.
  • Item: I give to my three sons Edward, William, and Latimer forty pounds of money to be divided among them equally at the age of twenty years, to be paid by my executrix, and if any of them die; the one to be the heir of the others.
  • Item: I give to Margaret my servant and Johan my daughter; each of them, a sheep immediately after my decease.
  • Item: I give to my brother Camber a little year-old colt.
  • Item: I give unto Roger Northen a lamb to him, and another to his wife, to be delivered by my executrix immediatley after my decease.
  • Item: I make John Camber of Tylbery and William Egeot of Raleigh my overseers; provided always that if my wife do marry before dies, he that marries her shall put in sufficient sureties to my brother Camber and my brother William Egeot of Raleigh, to pay to my children their legacies of my will after my death.
  • The residue of all my movable and unmovable goods unbequeathed, my debts being paid, and all charges answered I give and bequeath to my wife Anne conditionally: that she shall bring up my three children in the fear of God, and the same Anne; my foresaid wife, I ordain and make my sole executrix; willing her to see this my last will fulfilled and kept.
  • These being witnesses: Roger Northen and Francis Salmon with others.

Thomas King of Purleigh, Essex drafted his will on 08 Aug 1588, bequeathing: [10]

  • To his widow Anne:
    • the lease of his home, including the cattle, hogs, poultry and firewood on the property,
    • the lease of a small meadow called Church Meadow,
    • 5 seams (= 40 bushels), each, of wheat and oats,
    • the rights to either the household items that she owned when they married, or to a one-fourth share of all household items,
    • 50 pounds money.
  • To his eldest son Christopher:
    • all cattle and sheep on a farm called Twiselford in Burnham Marsh.
  • To his second son Edward:
    • the lease of Bennetts Wimarks and Dudware, including all cattle and sheep on the properties,
    • 6 pounds, 13 shillings, 4 pence currently in the hands of Christopher Harwood of Brankley; to whom Edward had been apprenticed.
  • To his youngest son George:
    • all cattle, sheep, rams and a bull on a farm called Cannons in Cold Norton,
    • an unspecified amount of money being kept by Mr. Raphael Pudsey of Grays Inn; his master.
  • To his son-in-law Thomas Hastler:
    • 5 pounds to be paid within one year of the decease of Thomas King, with no mention of the wife of Thomas Hastler; the daughter of Thomas King, who may have been deceased at the time.

Also named in the will:

  • To Edward King; son of the late John King of Burnham; deceased, 5 pounds to be paid when Edward reaches age 21.
  • To goddaughter, Elizabethe Freake, 10 shillings.
  • To goddaughter, Ellen Burles, 20 shillings, to be paid on the day of her marriage or at age 18; whichever comes first.
  • To all of his other godchildren within the parish of Purleigh: 12 pence apiece.
  • To his hired man John 5 shillings, and to each of his maids 3 shillings, four pence.
  • To his tenant, Thomas Carter, a 40 shilling abatement of rent.
  • To his tenants, Michael Gates and Thomas Eastward, 6 shillings, 8 pence each.
  • To his mother, Oley, 5 shillings.
  • To the poor of Purleigh 20 shillings, and to the poor of Norton and Burnham 6 shillings, 8 pence apiece, to be distributed immediately after his decease.
  • To sons Christopher, Edward and George, who were designated as co-executors of the will, the residue of all goods, chattels and debts, with Mr. Freake, as supervisor, to be paid 20 shillings for his efforts.

Thomas King of Purleigh, in the County of Essex; yeoman, being sick in body although of whole and perfect memory; thanks be to God, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, in manner and form following; that is, to wit:

  • Imprimis: I bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God; my creator, redeemer, and sanctifier, in whom and through the merits of his son Jesus Christ I hope to be saved. And I will my body to be buried within the parish churchyard of Purleigh aforesaid
  • Item: I give and bequeath unto Anne; my wife, the lease of the house wherein I now dwell, and at her death to dispose it as she will, together with the stock of cattle upon the ground; being eleven beasts, the swine and poultry also belonging to the house.
  • Item: I give and bequeath unto the said Anne; my wife, one roan gelding.
  • Item: I give and bequeath unto the said Anne all the firewood that is lying, or already brought to be laid, at the house before bequeathed, together with the wood upon the church ground.
  • Item: I give and bequeath unto the said Anne all such bills or debts from John Bennet; my landlord, as do concern the rent of my house.
  • Item: I give unto the said Anne my lease of a little meadow called Church Meadow.
  • Item: I give and bequeath unto the said Anne fifty pounds.

  • The residue of all my goods and chattels, debts and duties not bequeathed I do give to be divided equally among my three sons Christopher, Edward and George, whom I do make and ordain to be my executors, and Mr Freake to be my supervisor. And I will that he shall have twenty shillings for his pains in enjoining my said executors to pay my debts and to perform this my last will and testament.

The above written will was proved at London before master Henry Jones, doctor of laws, surrogate of the venerable master William Drury, also doctor of laws, master, guardian or commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, on the fourth day of the month of September in the year of our Lord 1588, by the oath of Thomas Ward, notary public, proctor of Christopher King, Edward King and George King, the executors, named in this will, to whom there was committed the administration of the goods, rights and credits of the said deceased, sworn to administer well and faithfully, etc.

Death and Burial of Anne ( -Peachy) King

Widow Anne (___-Peachy) King died and was buried at All Saints Parish in Purleigh, Essex on 02 Feb 1600/01. [13]
