Ties among the California Democratic Party political families of Brown, Newsom, and Pelosi and the billionaire Getty family date back three generations.
Willam A. Newsom (1902-1977) ran the Pat Brown campaign for San Francisco district attorney, who then later became governor of California.
His son, Justice William Newsom, who died in December 2018, had been an attorney for oil magnate J. Paul Getty, most famously delivering $3 million to Italian kidnappers of Getty’s grandson, John Paul Getty III, in 1973.
Gov. Pat Brown’s administration developed Squaw Valley for the 1960s winter Olympics and afterward awarded a concession to operate it to William Newsom, Sr. and his partner, John Pelosi.
Paul Pelosi made his own fortune in real estate and venture capital. The Pelosi family wealth catapulted his wife into campaign success in San Francisco politics, and ultimately, the 52nd Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. As of 2007, she stood as the ninth-richest person in the 435-member House. [1]
