Biography

Nathaniel Phelps I was a Connecticuter.

Nathaniel Phelps I was born on 7 January 1677[1] in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Capt Timothy Phelps and Mary (Griswold) Phelps.

Together with his brother, Timothy, he moved to the nearby new settlement of Hebron in Tolland County in 1690[2].

Nathaniel married Hannah Bissell on 28 Mar 1700 in Hebron[3][2]. Their children were:

  1. Hannah (Phelps) Sherwin (1702 - ~1792)
  2. Lieut. Nathaniel Phelps II (1703 - 1781)
  3. Lieut. Solomon Phelps (1716 - 1796).

When the settlement became a town in 1708 Nathaniel became the first town clerk and was active in the town affairs. He was also a captain in the militia[2].

After Hannah's death in 1717, Nathaniel married the widow Abigail Pinney on 5 Nov 1719 in Hebron[4][2]. Their children were:

  1. Abigail (Phelps) Allen (~1721 - 1804)
  2. Alexander Phelps (1723 - 1773)
  3. Mehitabel (Phelps) Ingham (1726 - 1773).

Nathaniel died on 23 Sep 1746 in Hebron aged 69[5].

Research Notes

  • There is potential confusion concerning the first marriage of Nathaniel Phelps to Hannah Bissell, as the handwritten record (see [5]; see also the presumed initial entry, [6]) indicates Hannah's maiden name as Hannah Phelps, and is dated 28 March 1699. The actual marriage of Lt. Nathaniel Phelps and Hannah Bissell evidently took place on 28 March 1700. A separate record dated 20 March is presumably a record of intentions.
