Biography

Alexander was probably born at Nether Leask^[1] in the Aberdeenshire parish of Slains in 1726 and was baptised in the parish on 27 December 1726.^[2] The entry made in the baptismal register was:

"Decemr [sic] 27th [1726] Wm. Pittendrich in Netherleask had a Son baptized Alexr witnesses Alexr Clark and John Pittendrich".

Entries in the baptismal register in Slains between November 1713 and September 1781 do not record the child's mother's name,^[3] so while William Pittendreich was recorded as the father, Alexander's mother's name was not given. She was probably Barbara Sime, who married William in Slains parish on 19 November 1713.^[4]
