Biography

Based on the date and location of her marriage to William Pittendreich (dates unknown), Barbara Sime was born towards the end of the 17th century, probably in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and possibly in the parish of Slains.

No evidence of her baptismal record has been found. Although it was possible for teenage girls to marry in Scotland at this time, Barbara is likely to have been at least 16 years old (and probably older than that), making her birth more likely to have been on or before 1697.

She was living in the parish of Slains when she married William Pittendreich there on 19 November 1713.[1] The entry made in the marriage register becomes increasingly difficult to read towards the end, but appears to state:

"October the 23d [1713] / William Pittendreich In Neyr [sic] Leask contracted Marriage with Barbara Sime In the Parish of Slains consigned their pledges for performance, were proclaimed and married Nover the 19 by r[everen]d Mr William Lane some time Min[ist]er at Crimond."

Entries in the baptismal register in Slains between November 1713 and September 1781 do not record the child's mother's name,[2] making the identification of Barbara's children challenging.

William's home in the marriage record was probably "Nether Leask".[3] Two children were born to William there and are likely to be Barbara's children:

  1. Elizabeth Pittendreich (1718–1783);[4]
  2. Alexander Pittendrich (1728–?);[5]

Between these children's births are recorded baptisms of:

  • Twin boys, John and Thomas Pittendreich, born to a William Pittenderich at "Byerloss" in Slains in 1720.[6]
  • William Pitendrich, born to a William Pitendrich of an unspecified abode in Slains in 1723,[7] who may also have been a witness to the baptism of William and Barbara's grandson, Alexander Ligertwood in 1758[8]

These three children may also be William and Barbara's children, however, the evidence to support or refute this possibiliy requires further verification.

Barbara's date and place of death are unknown.
