Biography

He was the 6th Great Grandfather of Queens Elizabeth II through his son Robert Porteus to the Bowes Lyons family.

He was born in Newbotttle, Gloucester Co. Virginia to Edward Porteus and Margaret Freeman. He moved with his family to Yorkshire in 1720. His will 'Robert Porteus Gentleman of Ripon, Yorkshire' was probated 7/9/1758 (PCC).

He first married Mildred Smith 17/8/1700, a first cousin once removed of President George Washington. Their eldest son Robert was born in Virginia. She died before 1712, when he married Elizabeth Jennings, daughter of Edmund Jennings, governor of Virginia (1706-10). In 1720, they moved to Yorkshire, England, where they baptised seven children at St Martin's Coney Street York: George (1720 d 1720), Mary (1722 d 1722), John (1723) Ann (1725), Richard (1726), Beilby (1731), Thomas (1734).

"'Near this Place are deposited the Remains of ROBERT PORTEUS ESQR. a native of Virginia, & a Member of His Majesty's Council or upper House of Legislature in that Province. From thence he removed to England, and resided first at York, afterwards at this town, where he died August 8, 1758, Aged 79 years."

I've built up the biography of Robert Porteus's second wife... The Wikipedia article on Beilby (citing Dictionary of National Biography) says they had 19 children. Beilby was the 18th. (See Jennings-1605#Children.)
