Biography

Abraham was born in 1823. He was the son of Darius Pratt and Phebe Baker. He passed away in 1889.

Abraham Pratt is a great example of why it is so important to research all the siblings of your direct line ancestors. He was the last child of Darius to die and in 1885 he submitted a biography which was published in the History of Portage County, Ohio.[1] The book is freely available at Google Books. In Abraham's biographical essay, he fills in some of the blanks in both his and his father's life. He lists the names of all of his 11 siblings, as well as the birthdays of both of his parents. He even mentions the names of both of his grandfathers. Of course you should always try and verify the information if at all possible because errors sometimes occur. An example of an error is in the date listed for Abraham's marriage. It is listed as 1837 when it should be 1847.

The 1850 Federal Census for Portage County has the young, married Abraham listed as a farmer.[2]

The 1860 Federal Census for Parke County, Indiana shows the complex moves of Abraham Pratt.[3] Some of his children were born in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. Abraham must have been a restless soul.

By 1870, Abraham and family are back in Portage County, Ohio.[4]
