Biography

Hugh Powell Price was born on 16 Nov 1822 in Tours, France to Hugh Price and Sophia Juliana Bulama Brodie.

Hugh Powell Price was baptised on 25 Oct 1824 in Llanfihangel Fechan, Brecknockshire, Wales.^[1]

In 1841 Hugh Price (age 18-22) lived at Castell Madock in Llandefailog Fach, Breconshire with his mother Sophia (45-49) and two sisters: Grace (20-24) and Eleanor (15-19), as well as his grandmother Grace Brodie (85-89) and five unrelated people (likely servants).^[2]

Hugh Powell Price of Breconshire (only son of Hugh Price of Castle Madoc and Sophia Juliana B, daughter of Francis Brodie, barrister) was admitted at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University on 25 May 1842. He matriculated at Michaelmas 1842. He was admitted to the Middle Temple on 8 Nov 1844.^[3]

Hugh Powell Price married Mary Alicia Thomas, youngest daughter of David Thomas of Welfield, Radnorshire, on 8 Oct 1845 in Llanelwedd, Radnorshire.^[4]

Hugh and Mary had two children:

1. Annabella Catherine Sophia Powell Price (1848-1873), died unmarried
2. Hugh Penry Powell (Price) Powel (1854-1910)

In 1851 Hugh Powell Price (age 28, Justice of Peace) and his wife Mary Alice (31) lived in Montgomery, Montgomeryshire in the household of his brother-in-law William Jones Thomas (39, Curate of Forden & Justice of Peace).^[5]

Hugh Powell Price inherited Castle Madoc upon his father's death in 1856.

In 1861 Hugh P Price (age 38, Land Proprieter) lived at Conduit Street West in Paddington, London with his wife Mary A (41) and two children: Hugh P (7, Scholar) and Catherine C L (12, Scholar), as well as his sister Grace R Price (41, Fund Holder), niece Annie A Thornton (17, Scholar), and servant Mary Williams (38).^[6]

In 1871 Hugh Powell Price (age 49, Magistrate) lived in Llanfihangel Fechan with his wife Mary Powell Price (52), son Hugh Penry Powell Price (17, Scholar), visitors Catherine L Thomas (18) and Sophia Thomas (16), and four servants: Elizabeth Jones (21), Mary Carpenter (39), Margaret Bevan (16), and David Shepherd (38, Coachman).^[7]

Hugh assumed the surname of Powel in lieu of Price on 22 Sep 1875, becoming Hugh Powell Powel. The Powel family were the original owners of Castle Madoc - Hugh's great grandmother was a Powel before she married, and when the Powel family had no more direct heirs Castle Madoc passed to her son and eventually down to Hugh Powell Price/Hugh Powell Powel.

Hugh's wife Mary Alicia Powel passed away on 31 Jan 1880.

Hugh Powell Powel married Selina (Frewen) Vickers, widow of Charles Vickers and daughter of Thomas Frewen, on 9 Jun 1881. The marriage was registered in Marylebone, London in the second quarter of the year.^[8] A marriage notice was published on 17 Jun 1881.^[9]

Hugh Powell Powel passed away on 26 May 1907, aged 84 years. His death was registered in Hungerford, Berkshire in the second quarter of the year.^[10]

"POWEL Hugh Powell of Castle Madoc Breconshire and of Wormstall Berkshire esquire died 26 May 1907 at Wormstall Probate Hereford 14 September to Selina Powel widow and Hugh Penry Powel Powel esquire Effects £14395 11s. 8d."^[11]
