Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Nicholas Proctor was a Virginia colonist.

Nicholas was born about 1698 in Surry County, Virginia Colony. He is the son of Joshua Proctor and Katherine Owen. He is believed to have died about 1776 in Brunswick County, Virginia. He his last found in records in a deed recorded in 1759 in Brunswick County.

Nicholas was born and presumed to have died in that part of Surry County, Virginia that was added to Brunswick County, Virginia in 1732.

Nicholas married Priscilla Rogers about 1724 in Surry County, Virginia Colony.[1] Priscilla is named as "Priscilla Proctor" in the will of her father dated 28 January 1725 and entered for probate on 17 May 1727 in Surry County, Virginia[2]

6 Apr 1746 Deed: Nicholas Proctor and wife Priscilla to Christopher Moring Jr. £80, 300 acres on Johnchecohumk Swamp [Surry County, Virginia] bounded by Joseph Newsom, David Flowers, Richard Proctor, and Robert Jordan (being all the land which said Nicholas Proctor bought from William Rogers and his father left him as by deed dated 15 July 1728). [3]

In 1759 "Nicholas Procter, Senr.," is mentioned as owning land in Brunswick County in a deed recording the sale of 130 acres in Brunswick County by his sons, Joseph and Nicholas Procter, Jr., to Benjamin Edwards. "Memorandum of Livery of Seizin signed by Joseph Procter (his mark), Nicholas Procter and Ann Procter (her mark) [possibly Joseph's wife Nancy or Nannie]. Indenture and Memorandum of Livery and Seizin proved in Court on February 27, 1759, by the oaths of John Edwards, Francis Young, and Charles Edwards. (Brunswick County Deed Book 6, page 333.)[4]

Research Notes

Almost no records have been found for Nicholas Proctor. A search of ancestry.com, familysearch.org, geni.com, and other genealogy websites found family trees which include his name and marriage to Priscilla Rogers. Birth dates range from 1674 to 1698 with death about 1775-1776. Since the earlier birth dates would have his age at death 88 to 109 years, it seems more realistic to assume he was born about 1698. An internet search using both Bing and Google search engines did not turn up any additional information.

I believe this is the same Nicholas Proctor as 1486. Yours would be the lowest number and so should remain when merged. The other has a slightly different birth date, but they look like the same man. Please merge. Darlene Scott Kerr
