The Kinman Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Kinman name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Kinman name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Kinmans), by time period (18th Century Kinmans), or by topic (Kinman DNA, Kinman Occupations, Kinman Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

How to Join
To join the Kinman Name Study, first start out by browsing our current research pages to see if there is a specific study ongoing that fits your interests. If so, feel free to add your name to the Membership list below, post an introduction comment on the specific team page, and then dive right in!

Research Pages
Here are some of the current research projects on which we are working. Any help is more than welcome.
- Connecting all the existing Kinman profiles on wikitree to their equivalent pages on the Kinman ONS website - the ONS webiste often contains more information than has been copied over into wikitree.
- Seeking new contributors to our Y-DNA program. Getting people to join is not easy, but it can be really rewarding. In this case showing the link between the very large US Kinman family and the much smaller root family of Kinman in England.
- Building the at-DNA database of Kinman descendants. This is very much work in progress and hopefully will help us fill in some gaps in the more recent Kinman family history where there is a lack of paper records.
- Adding in more paper trail research to expand on the bare bones that are already here.

About the Kinmans
There is a very large family of Kinman in the USA who all appear to descend from a single family in Pennsylvania about the time of Penn.
In England there is a diverse family of Kinman originating in Worcestershire, with most staying in the Midlands but one large branch moving to London. There is also a family of Kynman from Lincolnshire, who originally spelled their name as Kinman.
There is what appears to be an extinct branch of Kinman from Perthshire in Scotland, which may have been the root of the Kinmans of America, at least they came from Scotland according to family lore.
There are also branches of Kinman in Scandinavia and Central Europe, though these have not yet been touched on in this study.
