About the Project

The Kirtland Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Kirtland and related surnames. As Albert W. Curtis says in Kirtland-Mabie, A Family Descent

The significant fact to be noted in the astonishing vagaries of colonial spellings of the Kirtland name is that the t invariably persists.

So while this study is only connected to surnames Kirtland, Kirtlan, and Kertland, other 'K/C * TL * N(D)' variations are welcome. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in these surnames.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Kirtland's), by time period (18th Century Kirtland's), or by topic (Kirtland DNA, Kirtland Occupations, Kirtland Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

While it's ultimate origins as a surname are unclear, Kirtland has been a distinct surname from Kirkland since at least the late 1500s, when Philip Kirtland, the ancestor of many Kirtlands in the United States was living in Sherington, Buckinghamshire, England. His brother John was of Newport Pagnall, Buckinghamshire, England. There is a separate Kirkland Name Study.

How to Join

There are no requirements for joining in the Kirtland Name Study other than an interest in improving Kirtland and related surnames' presence on WikiTree.

• Mary Kirtland - My paper trail goes from Ohio back to Saybrook, Connecticut and ultimately back to Philip Kirtland of Sherington. But I am interested in learning about the origins of all Kirtland families and if the Kirtlans and Kertlands are related. If anyone has Kirtland/Kirtlan/Kertland yDNA, I would love to know if you match my dad. I would also love to have people with expertise in Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, etc. join the project, as most of my research has been done in U.S. and English records.
