About the Project

The Pope Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Pope name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Pope name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Pope's), by time period (18th Century Pope's), or by topic (Pope DNA, Pope Occupations, Pope Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Resources

One of the lines explored first will be the descendants of Thomas Pope (1608)

Although a good bit of this info is already in WikiTree, much of it is not. Perhaps some enterprising souls can change that with these files. What is in the GEDCOM starts from the Worden text and many cases extends lines where other source material was found.

~5100 profiles of Thomas Pope's descendants/spouses are supported by one or more sources including...
The Worden book
Wikitree (some with IDs, but not all)
Other sources listed, e.g., census, birth, death etc. In many cases these were captured from MyHeritage with supporting text
I was more interested in surviving and intersecting lines, so many of the relevant people who died in their teens or younger without issue or marriage are not included.
One link below to a GEDCOM
The other link below is to a RootsMagic backup file that includes whatever media I happen to have for these profiles.
Also included ~630- of Sara Jenney's ancestors from WikiTree

My father's birth name was Carl Robert Pope. However, when he was a teenager, he was adopted and his name was changed to Paul Robert Hathaway. He told me he was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania and had roots in New York state. I have letters from his brother Charles Pope from 1963-1967 from Bradford, PA. My father died in 1969. I think his biological dad may have been Charles Malone Pope and his mom's name was Cora Catlin.
